Dr. Kyla Johnson-Trammell is a nationally recognized education leader with 30 years of experience advancing equity, instructional excellence, and systems-level reform. As the longest-serving Superintendent of the Oakland Unified School District in three decades (2017–2025), she aligned diverse stakeholders around a bold equity vision and mobilized business, philanthropic, and community partnerships to secure more than $300M in aligned investments. Her leadership eliminated a 22-year state loan, restored fiscal stability, and enabled strategic reinvestments in instructional quality, competitive compensation, and student supports.
Dr. Johnson-Trammell led a nationally recognized COVID-19 response and co-founded Oakland Undivided with the City of Oakland, closing the digital divide for thousands of students and families. She advanced early literacy tutoring, career pathways, Dual Enrollment, and a nationally recognized Community Schools model—driving gains in graduation rates, A-G completion, and postsecondary readiness.
Currently, she serves as Superintendent-in-Residence with ILO Group, faculty at The Forum for Educational Leadership, and a trusted advisor to various organizations. She is Board Chair of Women Leading Ed, a Board Member of Oakland Promise, and an Advisory Board Member of the Netter Center at the University of Pennsylvania. Her honors include Alameda County Women’s Hall of Fame Education Leader (2024), NAACP Oakland Branch Honoree (2024), San Francisco Business Times Most Influential Women (2023), the OUSD Legacy Leadership Award, and the Golden State Warriors Impact Honoree (2026).
